Standard Grant - Sia for NixOS

Project Name : functioning Sia on official NixOS repo

Name of the organization: Chivo Systems LLC

Describe project:
Fully functional NixOS packages for deploying the main Sia desktop and server apps, renterd, hostd, walletd, and desktop (For those who use it on desktop as well)

How does the projected outcome server the foundation’s mission of user owned data:
Nixos is a popular and well deployed Linux distro that is immutable and managed thru a master .nix configration, there is currently no easy way to deploy Sia on NixOS, and making an easy way to do so would open Sia to work with systems that depend on NixOS to function. It may even be possible to extend the functionality of Nix at the language level by using Sia to enhance reproducible systems in ways that even we may not be aware of now.

Are you a resident of any juristiction on that list: No

Will your payment bank account be located in any jurisdiction on that list? no

Amount of money requested and justification with reasonable breakdown of expenses:
6,500 monthly retainer for development and upkeep on a best effort SLA

timeline objectives: we’d like to have the applications functional one application per 2-5 weeks, and maintained in accordance with NixOS upgrades and practices to work on the unstable NixOS branch first, and then get moved into the next available versioned Nix branch once all apps function well in the more cutting-edge NixOS unstable branch.

Potential Risks: symlinking may prove to be a bit tedious if required, but this is not likely. Building for Nix in a way that everything works in sync takes a considerable amount of work, but we as a Nix focused dev shop enjoy the challenge.

Will all of your project be open source? Yes

Hi @JackPala, thanks for your proposal to the Sia Foundation grants program.

We need additional information to be able to consider your proposal. You can check the other two standard grants currently submitted, DNNS and Sirkl, to see adequate examples.

Specifically:

  • We don’t provide ongoing funds with no end date. Projects must have a set duration and budget.
  • Your budget needs to be better detailed at the Standard grant level. “Monthly retainer” is not descriptive enough. Please itemize based on the work that will be provided, even if it’s as simple as “Developer fees”.
  • Timeline and objectives must be far more detailed, broken down into milestones as required by the standard grants template.
  • While not technically required at this level, any previous experience you can provide from your team will greatly aid the committee. They don’t typically provide grant funds to first time proposers and those without any provided development history.

We’ll be rejecting this proposal for now. If you feel like you can address the concerns listed above, please feel free to resubmit.
