Is there a google photos alternative for IOS on Sia? Like automatic syncing of gallery, like google photos?
Currently google storage is like $10 per month per TB. With Sia, we could have a 1-2$ alternative?
Additionally I don’t see this as realistic. You would need to accept lower redundancy on Sia if managing your own data (including managing your own contracts/SC). From exp, that is an average $4-5 USD /TB with redundancy.
And if you wanted to have managed hosting, where another handles things for you, the price will be higher…
These products WILL come, but not at that price point. As of right now from https://hostscore.info/, the average storage cost is $4.8 USD for 3 hosts. And hosts are running at a loss, to break even right now demand wise.
Making a fully featured google photos alternative is a hell of a lot of work. The primary example I’d give is immich which I use and is a solid alternative. But even 8,000 commits later it still feels kinda beta. An alternative could be build on Sia/S5, but it would require a lot of work to get it good. I’m not saying it’s a bad idea, but it would be a lot of work to get polished.
Vup is alright, but it hasn’t been updated in years so I don’t expect it to be nearly as good as an experience as something like immich.
Vup is getting work on the web version as part of redsolvers latest grant, and I expect that native will eventually get some work done after S5 is figured out…
