Grant Proposal: WordPress Plugin for Decentralized Media Storage on Sia

My name is Likki Samarth Reddy and I am submitting a proposal for the project WordPress Plugin for Decentralized Media Storage on Sia.

The purpose of this grant is to develop a plugin that allows WordPress site owners to upload and store their media files, including images, videos, and documents, directly on the Sia network. This will provide users with a low-cost, decentralized alternative to centralized providers such as AWS S3 or Google Cloud. By integrating with WordPress, which powers more than 40% of all websites globally, this project will directly serve the Sia Foundation’s mission of user-owned data by making decentralized storage accessible to millions of mainstream web users.

All code contributions from this project will be fully open source and published under an MIT license on GitHub. The completed plugin will also be submitted to the WordPress Plugin Directory to reach a wider audience and encourage adoption.

The project is designed to be completed within a three-month timeline. During the first month, I will focus on researching the Sia API and WordPress integration points while also designing the overall structure of the plugin. The second month will be dedicated to developing the core functionality that enables users to upload, retrieve, and manage media files through WordPress while seamlessly storing them on Sia. In the final month, I will test the plugin on sample WordPress websites, optimize its performance, and release full documentation and tutorials.

The measurable outcome of this project will be a working, open-source WordPress plugin with full Sia integration. It will be compatible with the WordPress media library, include installation and usage documentation for non-technical users, and be made available to the community on GitHub. By the end of the grant, I expect to have several active testers from both the Sia and WordPress communities providing feedback and demonstrating adoption.

There are some potential risks to acknowledge. Large file uploads may create performance challenges, but this can be mitigated with caching strategies and chunked uploads. The WordPress plugin review process may introduce delays in being listed in the official directory, but distribution through GitHub will ensure availability regardless. Another consideration is the reliance on users running or accessing Sia nodes for storage, which can be addressed through clear setup instructions and community support.

The total budget for this project is $10,000 USD. This includes $6,000 for development and testing, $2,000 for UI/UX design and WordPress admin integration, $1,000 for documentation and tutorials, and $1,000 for hosting, a demo site, and other miscellaneous expenses.

I commit to providing monthly progress reports to the Sia Foundation and to the community through the forum. All work will be tracked in public GitHub repositories so that progress is transparent and accessible. At the conclusion of the project, the Sia ecosystem will gain a widely usable, open-source plugin that directly brings decentralized storage into one of the world’s most widely used web platforms.

Hello, welcome.

While you provided the substance of the grant request process, you have not followed the exact template. Review Small Grant Proposal Template | Sia.

As for your request, if your goal is to have an alternative to S3, Sia is s3 compatible and so technically speaking nothing needs to be done as renterd can support it today. Assuming so, this grant request as-is is redundant.

It would also be ideal for you to do some research on the ecosystem so you have an better understanding of what is available and how things work.

Kudos.

May I ask you, what made you vote for your own proposal? Just curious.

Hello @likkisamarthreddy - thank you for your first grant proposal and welcome to the Sia community.

Considering the budget, this looks like you’re applying for a Small Grant. Please reformat the above to match our proposal template, with key details that can be found here.

(And thanks to @pcfreak30 for sharing this also as well as the advice on your goals.)

Without the correct format and supporting details, the Grants Committee will not review your proposal. Note the Committee next meets on September 2 so the above will need to be edited by this Wednesday, August 27 to allow time for review before this meeting.

Hello @likkisamarthreddy - since we have not heard from you, I will be moving this to the “Rejected” section of the Forum. If you would like to submit a new proposal please do so following our proposal template
