How the hell do you back up Siacoin wallet?

  • There's no backup option anywhere. What files should I save and where are these files?
This is such a basic question I can't believe I have to ask on a forum.

  • There is no option to backup the wallet in the sia-ui software! But you can backup the files by yourself! The files location is configured in the config.json file. The config.json is located in "Sia-UI-v1.2.0-win32-x64\resources\app" folder.
Open the file with text editor, you can see the "datadir" item. This item describe the backup files location!
in the default the files location is in the C:\user\username\AppData\Roaming\Sia-UI!

  • Hi,

All you need to recover your wallet is to write down on a physical paper your seed, which is the same as your wallet password.
Please do not go at manually backing up files from the Sia-UI folder as these are not guarenteed to work if placed back in a newer version of Sia-UI, above method is documented and always will work.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask!

    Regards

And what exactly do you do with a seed? How do you restore? How is this information not public somewhere in a faq?

    Try this https://siawiki.fornaxian.com/wallet/recovering_from_seed

Also keep in mind that the seed recovers your Siacoins only. My understanding is that you lose your uploaded files if you lose your Sia folder. Also you've got this:

@Taek said in March 2017 Update + Roadmap:

I am almost embarrassed that things are still this way, but currently on Sia if you delete the file locally, the redundancy will constantly degrade, and performance can also suffer substantially. So largely, you need to keep your files locally even as you upload them to Sia.

Apparently you need to keep your uploaded files locally in your system, otherwise the uploaded files may become inaccessible (!). At this point Sia seems to be only partially developed and it's not ready to be used yet, which is perfectly okay. But I'm struggling to understand what people are using it for. I see there are several TBs stored, but why? What's the purpose of paying for storage in Sia at this point when you also need the files locally? As a backup it's not useful, so what else is left?

  • How easy would it be a for a Sia developer to come out and give proper, exact instructions on how to back this up? Just write a detailed article with exact file names, screenshots, exact instructions and so on. The arrogance of thinking any of this makes sense or is intuitive...

I'm leaving it at the exchange for now
