System Requirements/Upload & Download Speed Capping

  • What are the recommended minimum system requirements for running Sia? It seems that Sia takes quite a lot of system resources to run, which makes it difficult to use and keep running while I'm doing anything on my PC. It defeats the purpose of Sia if I have to close it in order to free up system resources.

Also, is there any way to limit the bandwidth that Sia uses to upload or download? My network gets very bogged down while it's uploading or downloading, and that's even with a 100Mb/s plan with Time Warner.

  • @david let me just add that I have seen a significant reduction in the memory requirements since upgrading to 1.2/1.2.1. Before the upgrade the RAM was constantly hovering between 1.3-1.4 GB but now it is staying at about 130 MB. I don't know if anyone else has experienced this but it is a welcome relief for me. Regarding the network throttle I would also strongly agree that we should have the ability to cap the bandwidth usage to control our Internet connection usage by Sia.

We are planning on adding bandwidth limits to Sia soon, so that we don't need to be consuming 100% of your memory. In the meantime, there are tools for most systems that will allow you to throttle the amount of network usage a single process is consuming.

A few months ago we were not anywhere near fast enough to need to be worried about adding ratelimits, the fact that people are asking for them shows how far we've come. We'll be adding them soon.
