1000 Terabyte - 100 Host Array
-
Hi,everyone!
A few minor delays will be pushing our opening date back. We are waiting for a delivery of some equipment including the transfer switch. In the meantime we are installing the overhead cable racking and finishing up the office space.
We are now hoping to have the first servers up before May 10th.

-
@theone How is the progress mate? Still on schedule to launch on May 10th? Huge fan here :)
-
terribly if one large player can jeopardize the balance among fellow hosts - I really have fingers crossed that math in the renter app take good care of this.
Having the network capacity multiplied over night cannot be healthy.. This is so far away from the idea with SIA, as I understand it.
Perhaps it does not matter so much in this early stage - I struggle to see any one make profit with the current demand for storage and the total lack of integrated easy consumable services aimed at the masses..
-
1 large player should not matter for now. It might in the future. Small issue.
-
Eventually the network will become so large that 1 PB more or less won't really matter

@larsfloe then you'll be glad to know that the renter will be able to work around this and make sure that data remains decentralized. And it will work even better when we start optimizing for geographic diversity.
Sia is very different from Bitcoin mining. Renters have the ability to choose their hosts, but Bitcoin users don't have the ability to choose their miners. So one large host does not have as much ability to threaten the network as a large miner in Bitcoin. Especially if all the servers are in the same geographic location.
-
@Taek Hi Taek, could you please elaborate a bit more on how the renters can freely choose the hosts? Thank you.
-
...guessing the renter is in this context referred to as the autonomous software bit that does the math to automatically select it's host ?
-
Any further update on the project your building ? Looking forward to seeing the pics.
-
Ok so I'm a potential customer (renter) where do I go to signup for service.
-
@tmctech; SIA dosen't work that way...
That's the whoe idea of decentralization. Youd do not pick nd chhose your host.. <your renter, the program does that for you..

Hello to everyone,
We're running a bit behind schedule.
-still waiting on our Fiber install (permits took longer than anticipated)
-racks just arrivedIn order not to wast any more time we may launch the first few servers in our current data center (start with 10 servers -100TB) .
I will take a few more pictures some time this week.
-
Here are a few more pictures.
We ended up getting these units for a little over $100 per Rack (used).

We plan to bring them to the new Data center sometime next week (waiting until we are finished with the lift).
-
A bit more information about our project:
The initial setup will consist of NORCO RPC-4224 4U Rackmount Server Cases. Each case will support 24 Hot-Swappable SATA/SAS Drive Bays (may go with a custom cases in the future).

http://www.norcotek.com/product/rpc-4224/
On the software side we will be using Freenas with RAIDZ3 storage pools. The back end will be managed by Apache CloudStack and KVM Hosts (KVM Hosts will be provisioned from dedicated servers / not from the NORCO systems) . https://cloudstack.apache.org/
Good times ahead of us..
-
@theone great update. Your data center up already?
-
I think this is great news!
SIA tech needs big innovative players, who just do not seek ROI in 24 months, around it to get more hype!
SIA is great idea and using great technology to produce real decentralized storage... I believe that this is the direct where data storage is going.Little worried about how SIA network handles that data would not end up in same data center?
Is it using some geo identification?
Of course when network goes bigger enough it is probably not an problem anymore.
But if this takes 33% share of all available data storage this will probably be an issue... all user data can end up to same data center.I myself will try also support and contribute to SIA. I was planning to set mining / storage dedicated hardware (lot of GPU and disk). Of course I do not have recourses like this and only building in my "home lab". :)
Noes testing the mining and planning...
Oh well I get of the track here!Great news and nice to see like this innovative projects!

We've got some great news to announce. We finally got the Fiber installed (waiting for it to be lit).

We expect to have our first hosts up within a few weeks.
-
Awesome news! Excited to see all that storage on the network :D
-
So many delays but I really hope to see your storage online soon! Good luck!
-
@theone any updates on this? Seems you haven't updated us about your progress for some time.
