Unable to restart Sia wallet and lots of Sia processes running after closing wallet on win 10 pro as non admin

  • Hi, So I unpacked the Sia-UI-v1.1.0-win32-x64 software on my win 10 pro machine that I run log on with as a non-admin user. I am able to successfully run the Sia GUI Wallet and sent some SC coins to the wallet that were received just fine so I closed the wallet GUI.

    Hours later, however, I was not able to restart it. After looking in my task manager I noticed 8 sia Electron processes running and one siad.exe running. After ending all these tasks in task manager I was able to restart the wallet and see my coins in the wallet after ~5 minutes or so of syncing. Again after properly closing down the wallet I see all those Sia processes running.

    Why are these processes not closing down upon exit, so i can restart the wallet problem free as needed?

    Thanks

  • Hi really,

    Sia-UI uses Electron, which is essentially a special fork of Chrome designed to run web apps cross platform. It's designed and optimized to run multiple processes. The UI is designed to keep running in the taskbar after the main windows is closed, like a few other networking oriented programs (bittorrent, etc). You can quit the UI by going into your taskbar, right clicking the 'Sia' icon, and clicking Quit.

    Let me know if you have any more questions

  • @johnathanhowell If I am simply running a wallet I can't see why tasks need to be running in the background? Anyway those torrent apps usually have an option to close all background processes on exit. I would hope Sia would add this option in the future. Now I have to manually close 9 processes from the task bar to exit it.

  • admins

    I could be wrong, but I believe that there is a master process you can close which will cause all of the other processes to shut down.

  • Note that this will cause an unclean shutdown, really what you want to do is to exit the UI the normal way through the task bar

  • When I right click on the taskbar, I only see 3 options, none of them quit;

    1. Sia Electron
    2. Pin to taskbar
    3. Close Windows

    I click on close window and the app closes down, but the 9 processes remain running. So I exit siad.exe via the Task Manager but the 8 electron pocesses still run. Maybe because I am running as a non-admin?

    I did try to run the process as administrator but the same issue is still there on exit.

  • @really sorry, you want the toolbar (the thing in the bottom right). There should be a small 'Sia' icon, you may have to expand the toolbar by clicking the arrow

  • Thanks, that worked perfectly, I hadn't noticed it was in there before.
