Restart of Sia UI

  • I was success to restart Sia GUI without any error, all is running fine now, but HOW do I get my contracts back so they users have upload to me get back the files again ?

I've got an error before and I remove all most all dirs in Appdata/rouming/SIA... except wallet, consensus and renter. AND reopen SIA

How do I type the seeds commands.

I wrote : wallet seeds and then the seeds passwd come up...

    Regards Peter

  • @petern66; did you recover your contracts? I have similar issue, and cannot make that happen...

As of today, the seed can only be used to recover the money in the wallet, it cannot be used to recover files. I am sorry if you have lost data :(

It will be probably 6 to 12 months before you can recover files using just the seed, and this added feature will not be backwards compatible. Today it's important to keep the file metadata + contract metadata backed up if you want to have access to your files. This metadata is a lot smaller than the original files, but it still must be backed up. We are working to remove these barriers and requirements, but it'll take some time.

  • @Taek; I would say I have the files and meta data intact. I followed the instructin and took out the JSON files. However my set up is not complete; no files, no contracts and not the same configurations as before the crash - any idea how to bring it back?? ...also, for the future, which files do I need to back up and how often?

  • @Taek; I decided to start all over!?... The question still persists; whch files do one need to back up in order to not land here again, where I lost contracts, collatteral and files, please??

you need to back up the storagemanager.db, the storagemanager.json, the host.db, and the host.json.

Unfortunately, these need to be very recent backups as well, so if you want to avoid trouble you should probably do something like mirroring.

We have only seen this issue on Windows. If you are running Linux, I don't believe you will run into the same problems. (Windows does not have the same protections against file corruptions that Linux does).

  • Thanx Taek, I'm having this on a windws PC, that is used as home PC - nothing powerful, nothing special it's an Intel NUC. I'm planning to attach more drives to it via USB a little dependant on how stability for this small set up is showing over the months to come and also dependant on the net work utilization and the up coming use cases. No plan to move this to Linux, so I hope the stability will improve. I can mirror the files to a hosted back up solution I have in place off site, and restore a recent set, when I experience the next hickup.

  • @taek: This happens again! 4th time - struggeling to get it back, even I have restored the 4 files you mentioned... I've lost about 15000 coins on these incidents and the stored files and contracts :-( ... Desperate.

EDIT: Seems to work if miner.json is cleard combined with restoren recent versions of the mentioned files... fingers crossed.. Question; if I took a back up that was 4hrs old, would any collatteral locked up in contracts/files in that period be lost??

I'm struggling to understand what the problem is. Can you explain in more detail what happened, what files are missing? It is pretty rare that it would happen 4 times I think. To recover your files on today's Sia, you need the most recent copy of the renter directory. 4 hours old is too old if you have uploaded or downloaded files since that time. We are working to make this not the case, but today it is the case.

  • @Taek: The SIA UI error upon start up.. Seems some files get corrupted. I was however able to recover the contracts and seem to continue to get files in the storage. It is not my own files - it is the files that I host I'm worried about - to loose collatteral on.. It is working now, but it will hap pen again in my setup up I'm sure... I have close to 300 contracts - so far I see no errors... :-) But really look forward to a self restoration feature, to not loose anytihg upon write/error, but again I'm worried on the hosting file side of things..
