How to upgrade

  • Ok Im waiting for the new version to Sync, I seem to be stuck on block 22780. Will try restarting.

When syncing the DB it will sometimes check if the downloaded data is correct, this will take a while and stall downloading. You can see if it's doing this by running htop and looking for siad threads with 100% CPU usage, that means it's busy. Or look in the task manager if you're using Windows. Restarting the client will only slow down this process.

If it stalls for more than a few hours (depending on your computer's speed) it might be a good idea to restart

  • Thanks it seems to be moving again now

  • It took a long time to sync, however I lost all of my contracts.

I now have a bunch of invisible Sia files clogging up my HDD

What do you mean by invisible Sia files? They should have been deleted.

  • Well I set aside a 50GB partition and its still got 19GB used which is the same amount from before the upgrade...
I cant find the files to delete them

  • Ok I found the old files and deleted them. If everyone needs to delete their files for each upgrade, Sia isnt going to be very reliable. I humbly submit we need a more elegant upgrade path.

Fully agreed. And we do have a better upgrade path planned, but we want to get the other important features working first. Namely, it should be easy, fast, and cheap to upload all of your files and currently that is not the case.

  • Okay, I just finished upgrade from 0.4.8 to 0.5.1. At first I did what in-cred-u-lous said and lost all contracts (120GB), host dir was emptied by siad. Also consensus has beet lost and I had to wait it to load again. Afterwards I shut down siad and copied old host dir over new one again and started sia. It took all night for siad to check up stuff but now looks like I have my 9kS worth contracts back. For some reason Sia-UI shows 260 GB in use but host dir is still 120GB.

I am disappointed a bit, because both upgrading and not upgrading causes you to lose contracts (previous time I upgraded from 0.3.3 to 0.4.8 because I accidentally found out my 0.3.3 not increasing block height indication for month with absolutely no error indication).

=/ sorry about that. We will be making upgrades simpler in the future. The changes that we are making going forward are not going to be as severe.
