  • Sia uses erasure coding. In short, a file is split into n pieces such that it can be retrieved from a subset of the n pieces. Each piece is stored on a different host. On top of that, there is some redundancy factor. Thus, each file you upload is distributed among a large number of hosts. So, there cannot be one-to-one relationship between peers on the Sia network. Setting aside space therefore only to trusted peers is not possible.

    I expect that one day there will be a blacklist of IPs known to store illegal content, say, on Sia. Such a blacklist may be enforced legally to protect copyright holders, victims of crime and Sia hosts alike. You could implement a blacklist (or whitelist) already today with your firewall, and that way permit only trusted peers to upload to your host. It is also likely, however, that there one day will also be a reputation metric. By blocking most peers you would then be rated very low and unlikely to be chosen as host by anyone running the standard Sia client.

    So no, in my opinion, renting out to trusted peers only will likely not be implemented (though, its not a bad idea but there are already solutions for this).

    As the backend gets fancier, we will support increasingly complicated trust schemes. If you as the user trust data center X or Y or want to make sure that there's files in at least one country outside of the 5 eyes program or something like that, you should be able to configure that.

    Out of the box Sia will work to maximize speed, reliability, and cost, but for users with different models of the network, we are planning on adding configurability. These features will probably not be available until late 2016, however.
