Better Support For Dynamic IP Hosts

We'll have to work through all of the scaling implications, but I believe that there's a way to support hosts without needing to rely on solutions such as dydns. If we give hosts a public key, they can continually announce new ip addresses on the blockchain and renters can follow them around.

As scaling becomes more of an issue, we can figure more things out. I believe Storj uses a DHT, which is not necessarily a secure solution, but there may be a handful of alternative technologies we can use to achieve the same goals.

  • Good to hear you will address this. I think many past and current users were not aware that when IPs change, old files hosted become unreachable and hosts are therefore not paid. Its worthwhile to reiterate this a few times over so the message is heard by future hosts, until a solution is found.

DyDNS should not be a requirement. Its not a particularly complicated task to configure dydns, but depends on a 3rd party for the DNS service, potentially having to register a domain and so forth. These are all unnecessary complications.

  • Couldnt your IP get attached to your Wallet?

  • @ryancstl23 The issue is that the IPs of hosts keep changing, so you'd want hosts to identify themselves with a public key on the network rather than by their IP address.
