How to restore a wallet with seed words?

  • Hello.

How can I restore my old wallet with seed words? I can’t find this option in the 1.0.1 client user interface. If I have to use "Terminal" section, let me know what exactly I should do.

    Thank you! 

  • Same question. It's strange this hasn't worked out yet. The desv may at least give some explanations as it seems it's not on their to-do list despite the obvious importance of the function?

  • You can do it from the Terminal plugin. If you know your old seed just type wallet load seed and press enter. It'll prompt you for your current wallet's seed, then the seed you want to import. Hit enter and you should get a success message.

  • Hi, I have done exactly that, started "wallet load seed" command, entered current (empty) wallet seed, then I entered seed of the wallet I wish to restore. After that I got "Added Key" message. However when I try to unlock the wallet with my original seed I get an immidiate "error when calling /wallet/unlock: provided encryption key is incorrect" response. The new wallet's seed still works. That still happens after restarting Sia-Ui.

When I try to do "wallet load seed" command again, I get "error when calling /wallet/seed: seed is already known" response.

I've also tried removing Sia-Ui folder from Appdata, but it didn't help.

I've got a problem here, what do you guys suggest me to do?

  • I am having a hard time understanding what you are trying to do. What wallet load seed does is load all funds from an old wallet into your current wallet, but it doesn't change your current wallet's password. (You still need to keep both seeds too, ie keep a copy of the old seed, and the current one.)

Be careful if you are messing with the Sia-UI APPDATA folder. If you corrupt the files and don't have a backup you will need to regenerate a wallet and re-download the block chain which can take a while. Additionally if siad is running in the background while doing this (which is the default for Sia-UI) you stand a chance of corrupting files.

You should never have a blank wallet seed. Are you saying that you tried to load a seed before you created a wallet?

Well, shame on me then, I thought it would allow me to use my old wallet again. Seems I've lost my coins then, as I don't have seed for the new wallet saved (RAMdisk). Good thing that was only 1,1$ worth of coins, IMO worth what I learned about SIA wallets.

    Thanks for clarifying.

  • You can still create a new wallet and use that command to load the funds from your old (1st) wallet into it. As long as you didn't spend them that is. As long as you have your seed you won't lose any money.

  • Hello. I have just successfully restored my old wallet with this "wallet load seed" command :-)
My fund appeared after closed and restarted SIA 1.0.1 but still can't see a few my files I have uploaded to the network, what should I do to retrieve those files?
    p.s.
I have payed for storing of these files so they should be there
    Thank you!

    Thank you

Unfortunately, the seed is not enough to recover files. If you lost your old data, your files have disappeared with it.

In the short term, there's not much we can do to address this. Over the next 6-12 months however we have plans for enabling the recovery of files from just the user seed.

  • Fortunately I have access to both my computers and just testing what this thing (SIA 1.0.1) is capable to do. What additional data should I export-import to be able to access my files on new computer?
    p.s.
I am very happy that this feature (recovering file from only a seed) will be available in 6-12 months.

The renter/ folder is about all you need, just move that from one computer to the other.
