Purchasing Siacoin coin

I'm interested in Siacoin and the concept behind it ....can I just purchase Siacoin without having to rent out hardware space or will I get penalised with just keeping the coins on the wallet ?

If you do not use the hosting and uploading parts of the wallet your coins will always stay in your wallet.
Siacons can be bought on exchanges like shapeshift and poloniex. Shapeshift allows you to swap coins without having to register an account.
