Where does the files go during Synchronizing?

As stated in the subject, where does the files get downloaded to during syncing? I have a Mac - while syncing it was taking forever so I decided to sync on my windows instead. Noticed that was taking forever too. Upon look up it seems that it takes about 10gb to sync, is that true? and if it is where does the files go to? I plan to delete the files on the Mac version.
