Allowance

  • Could you please link me to an explanation of allowance?
How many SiaCoins is needed to become a host ? I did see that @Taek mentioned that allowance should be at least 20K, is that the amount I need in the wallet?

  • There is no fixed amount. The allowance depends on the size of storage contracts you form with hosts, not how much storage you have on offer. So, a small collateral is paid for each new contract with a renter. Some of that collateral is always returned to you. Another portion is returned only if you succeed the storage proof, i.e. you still have the files when the renter asks for a proof close to the end of the contract.

I don't know the exact calculation that needs to be done to compute the allowance size. Hopefully, @Taek will write a short guide soon to explain this to us.

Renter guide is a bit farther away than the host guide. We'll have something ready in the next 2 weeks I think.

I would recommend that you have an allowance of at least 20KS, you are going to be forming between 20 and 40 contracts (depending) and each one is going to require transaction fees, collateral fees, etc. All of that is going to consume like 4KS right out of the gate. If you've only set your allowance to 5KS, then 80% of your funds aren't even going to storage.

    oh.

That might explain why my uploads keep failing and stalling

  • Allowance is only for renters and not for hosts - Is that correct ?`

The hosts have a collateral budget, but this is different from a renter allowance.
