New to Sia - New to Mining

  • I am new to crypto trading and I really like the concept and the community behind Sia. I've invested a small amount into Sia and I also decided to start mining as of yesterday with two GTX 970's. This is my first ever attempt at mining a crypto currency and so far I am averaging around 6.4 SC per hour. This isn't much I know, but it has been a very fun and addictive process so far and I'm considering buying two 1080ti's to increase mining.

I have two questions I'd appreciate some input on:

    1. Should I be runing the 970's in sli while mining? Looking at my hash rates they look similar with sli enabled, but my cards don't seem to be being stressed so hard, which is probably a good thing?

    2. What sort of hash rates are people pulling as of today with two 1080ti cards?

    Thanks everyone,

    Happy mining

  • Don't need to SLI. It doesn't provide any benefit.

1080ti, IIRC, is about 3GH/s. My 1080 is around 2200.

Unless you have a specific reason for using nvidia, Amd cards are better for mining.

@blammas 1080s are a bit too expensive to turn a profit. Best to go with used R9 series or RX series if you can get them. Less stress is best.

  • @xurious I'm mining with Marlin in the siamining pool, two 970's with cuda drivers. I'm using Nvidia because they are the only spare cards I have at the moment, I'll be interested to see what the new Vega cards will be like fow mining, i'm guessing they will be quite good. If you don't mind me asking, how many SC's are you averaging per day on one 1080?

  • @bryan I think I'll wait to see what the new Vega cards are like and maybe grab a couple of them instead of 1080's. Once Obelisk is released, I'm assuming it will get really hard to mine Sia profitably with standard cards.

@blammas A quick google search shows me that the Vega doesn't even have double the power of the R9 290. Sounds to me like another quick cash grab like the RX series. And for the price of 1000$ I don't see room for mining to profit.

  • @bryan Are you talking about the Frontier Edition? There are more gaming orientated models coming out soon with potentially higher clock speeds, but little to no info has been released about them yet. You could be right about a cash grab, either way, they won't match the power Nvidia's 1000 series.

@blammas I'm not sure I just clicked the first specs I saw. Clock speed won't be as important as how many cores. Either way they're gouging so hard.
