dang! how can you make a profit like that?

Profit is only for those with the very large storage farms. Everybody else can profit from being able to utilize some of their spare capacity which would otherwise go unused. Don't buy specifically for hosting, it's not going to be worth it!

Read up on what Sia is aiming to achieve: distributed storage at a tenth of the cost of Amazon S3 or less. You can't beat that. But if you can use your spare capacity for hosting, then that's more income than if nobody used it!

i dont even see how a large storage farm can make money at about 1 usd per tb

  • @jhip626 Ask SIA/NEBULOUS how to make profit.. they never promised people profit (to my knowledge)... they promised people cheap storage.
How they balance that is the issue.

yea, why host if you aren't making a profit. it would cost me more in electricity to do that. doesn't make sense.

  • @jhip626
Just don't share under your acceptable limit! Do not offer to bear the costs of others.
I am hosting at a price I can afford to.

I really don't understand why some people think they should get private encrypted offsite storage granted, the hosters should bear all costs and responsibility, and miners should get all the money from that process.

but it seems like if you aren't cheap enough, no one will use you because someone else is gonna be cheaper. I want to believe in Sia but it really doesn't make sense from a hosting standpoint. and if there is no profit in hosting, people wont host. and the project will fail

  • @jhip626
    Exactly.
You loose less by not offering underpriced storage services than taking the responsibility and accepting commitments by offering such but realizing it was a mistake later.

So, yes, if you are not cheap enough, you get nothing.
I am just waiting for the cheapest hosts switching off or increasing the price.

Strangely today I noticed 2 new contracts and already 1.5GB uploaded to my "expensive storage" host... I was not expecting to see so good renters yet.
