Getting into Hosting, a couple of noob questions

  • Hello everyone! :D

A couple of weeks ago a reddit comment told me about SIA, I inquired a little bit here and there and got really interested in what you guys are doing! The idea of having a decentralized cloud storage with encrypted data sounds awesome and I would like to contribute what I can to it.

    So in short my questions:

    1. What is the minimum amount of space I should have to be able to host (everything is in TB, but I've read somewhere that from 25GB is enough, but then I saw that there are a lot of penalizations for less than 1TB of space :/)

    2. What's the recommended connection speed to be able to host, and how does the price for that Bandwidth depend from it?

    3. When does a contract breaks? For example if for some reason my computer goes down for 2 days, will the contract be automatically cancelled or as long as I have the files it is up?

    4. Should the data being stored by SIA be backed up somewhere?

    5. What is the vision for the future profitability of hosting? Like right now it isn't profitable and most is doing it to help the community and to experiment a little with the workings of the system, but how do you see the market working in the future? Will there be a stable monthly income enough to pay for the power bill, maybe upgrade and enlarge the storage capacity eventually?

Also: I believe that to not waste the ability and desire of people willing to help SIA, the hosts should be able to state how much time they can be available per day/or week (maybe even stating the schedule), and charging less for that. In this case if someone wants to store their files for a long term, cheap and will not be needing to retrieve them anytime soon (or at least not out of the contract schedule uptime)

  • I'm not SIA but I always recommend to take the following first steps:

The following write up on it, which is quite good.

Also this speach from the founder of SIA is usefull:
    -> https://www.infoq.com/presentations/decentralized-storage

  • Thanks for the info, I already read the handbook, but the info I wanted to know wasn't there :). gonna check the video!

edit: Nope, nothing about this in the video :(. Was very interesting tho!

  • :/ srsly, like 80 views in the hostin forum and no one can reply to simple questions?
    damn you're helpful with newbies!

  • There is nothing against newbies here. Some people just can't answer your questions.

    1. The minimum amount of free space to not incure a hosting penalty for not enough free space is 4tb.

    2. There's no connection speed qualification yet. Apparently they are implementing "proof of bandwidth" in a future patch. However I'm hosting on a 60/5 line without an issue.

    3. No direct answer, but your uptime score takes a hit when it falls below 95% uptime.

    4. That's up to you. If you lose your hosting data for sia, then you lose your collateral. There hasn't been a hard study on collateral loss vs drive costs yet, simply because the market is fluctuating too much.

    1. It's profitable to host, but the returns are just slow. I would say many people are doing sia hosts as just side proejcts on their homelab gear. It's a great way to boot strap the hosting backend.

Also) That would most likely be a future endeavor. It's not a bad idea.

  • @exwoll Your reply is justified. Sia is doing a sloppy job with newbies and those who bring a critical voice to the scene. I know first hand. They are just making it tougher on themselves when they attempt to silence or ignore. I agree 200% with you. Most of Sia woes could be clarified with someone actually just sitting down and writing (truthfully) the system behavior with system experience. I agree Handbook - outdated- ll this other parced info is just a indicator of the disorganized structure going on here. truth is Truth.
