What is the cost of my renting?
-
Hello Sia enthusiasts!
I am currently renting to get hosting for 174 small files of a total of 180MB. I am trying to figure out the answers to a question that I thought would be simple:How much does my renting cost per period?
It seems the answer is not as simple as taking the advertised "2USD per TB per months" because it seems my very small files were inflated due to the poor support for small files on sia. Most of my ~50 contracts have a "Data" value of more than 400+ MB which is why I feel confirmed in my impression that my storage need is much bigger than 180 MB.
I'll break down my line of thinking and questions:
- How long are my contracts valid? Can you confirm my understanding: All my contracts have an end height of 120270. Assuming 1 block being mined every 10 minutes and current block being 112131 that puts the end date to ~56.5 days away. Is that thinking correct?
- What is the total cost of my contracts? Renter price shows 198.6 SC / TB / month. I do not know how many TB I currently rent.
2.1) What is the total size of my files? I received a list of my contracts via renter contracts in the console and it shows me the "Data" in MB. Is there a better solution to figure out the total data size without having to punch all of these into a calculator?
Well I guess with this I would have the response to my original question. I don't want to appear as too lazy to punch in ~50 numbers into a calculator, just want to make sure I'm even on the right track. I assume this is not an issue if you store large files

Question 1: Why are you assuming a block is mined every 10 minutes. Use Sia Explorer and you can find out . Last I checked it was 1100 blocks completed per week or 92.3 every 10 minutes (do the math to check that).
Using my figs.. thats 7.4 weeks from now or 52 days. But alas.. isnt this a bit stupid to have to calculate when your contract ends? A BIG Sia fugg up if you ask me...Question 2: This question has been asked and asked... unknown. What you can do is verify the use of your allowance against the datat you have used in the contract. But this doesnt equal cost in hard numbers. Another Sia Coin fugg up. Lack of transparency.
Question 2.1: No. Another Sia fugg up.

Hi moorsc0de,
Thank you for your response and also thank you for the link, very enlightening! Great to see there are users like you who really challenge the solution to provide the devs with the feedback they need to improve- If I do the math with 1100/week it comes down to 157.14/day and 6.5476 per hour... which is not that far off from 1 block every 10 minutes :-) I got that number from some comment I found on google. Either way it seems my contracts will be valid these ~50 something days.
1.1 Where did you get the figure of 1100 blocks per week? I did not see that on sia explorer. Well, I can put in current height minus 1100 blocks and I'll see a date 7 days in the past at least. - All right, seems I just cannot know the contract details. :-( Really made me think if I should take all my files off until this is improved. However, my allowance is only something like 20 USD currently so I'll keep them online to continue my test.
Thanks a lot!

@qm99 Sia explorer will tell you the block height for any date.. all you have to do is select a span of about 2-3 weeks and do the math.
