Solo mining says 'No work ready ... continuing'

I was going to explore solo mining for just 1 day, curiosity.

So I have the daemon running, and I have gominer running, it seems to be working for a while but then it reports

0-667.7 1-626.4 Total: 1294.1 MH/s 2017/06/27 07:07:38 1 - No work ready
2017/06/27 07:07:38 1 - Continuing

Normally though I just this one line that updates at the bottom

0-667.7 1-667.7 Total: 1335.4 MH/s

I am wondering what the 'No Work ready' means

Perhaps it's busy retrieving the next puzzle to work on? so that's a way of saying gominer is idle for a few seconds?

In that I'm in the dark here and can't tell if I'm mining unless I hit a block? factoring in people say they've been mining for 10 months and have never hit a block yet?

I am concerned whether I am actually solo mining here or not.

Any thoughts on how to validate if this is all working? it 'seems' to be but again, that 'no work ready' puzzled me.

I've googled and googled and even hit ole Lycos the dog up for fun.

@Tim-Miltz I haven't even heard of anyone actually solo mining. I'll follow this post to learn if someone posts how it works.
