23KS for 33MB renter contract

  • Hi there.
Recently I've got a weird contract as renter, and I'm trying to understand what happened.
I have noticed that my balance dropped by 23KS, looked at transaction history and renter contracts, and it turns out, that Sia has made a contract for storing 33MB with that payout.
Host Remaining Funds Spent Funds Spent Fees Data End Height ID
    brizio.ddns.net:9982 22.46 KS 2.716 SC 945.2 SC 37.75 MB 124287 fc56c2541e3e33ab9638ce93fddb87e60d1f779af36c63c76b23b8c448c4f8db
This doesn't make sense, since I have set renter allowance of 4KS, and I store a couple of tiny files on Sia.
I looked up host data and turns out he has 43 KS/TB/month price, which is absurd, but ok, if I had an allowance that high.

So my question is, what does renter allowance mean exactly? It is clearly not a "maximum amount you are willing to spent on rent", as we can see from such a contract.
Or, maybe that is a bug?

@theihor 43 as in 43,000 per month? It could be from back when sia was worth a 100th of what it is now and just hasn't been updated. I'm not sure about the allowances. I stopped trying to use it until they get it more stable and user friendly.

  • Yeah, so these 30Mb cost me a bit.
Well I knew there is a risk of something like that happening, when I started using Sia.
But I want at least to understand what exactly happened.

And I find it very weird that nobody can answer a simple question what the fork renter allowance mean.

  • @theihor Maybe this new blog post can give some insight, it was posted today :-)

How to Put Data on the Sia Network

  • Though it is not said explicitly, from this post one can assume that renter never spends (or locks for contracts) more than allowance. But that did happen in my case.

So either the assumption is wrong or there is some serious bug in renter.

It would be nice to get some comment from devs on this.

@theihor It could be something the devs are already working on.
