Constructive Criticism and brainstorming

  • Hello,

Thank you for the get-started guide. I have finally taken the step to become a user on the network by uploading some files for a test drive. I have been following SIA since early May and I am very happy with the progress it has made. I wanted to bring forth some concerns all in the light of constructive criticism. Several points below(not in order of importance):

    1. Installation of interface takes too long. Currently going for 4h at 9.4% completion only.

    2. Not being able to buy SIA directly is not a huge miss at the moment considering more and more people have crypto and can exchange. Nevertheless, I do believe buying with CC/PayPal/ etc. directly on the website/ interface will be a huge help for attracting people just hearing about this world.

    3. Clarification on how and why using the network for storage is safe and credible for the user’s equipment/ files. Digital world is scary and people need assurance that they and their data is protected whilst using the network. I believe safety is number 1 issue when we talk about file exchange and storing files on a global network.

    4. Getting on board large business as renters. To disrupt the industry, how would SIA combat the millions of dollars poured in marketing/ data centers/ equipment / labor/ maintenance that current market leaders providing cloud storage have established?

    5. There are other decentralized projects that could complement SIA and promote further growth. Any plans on contacting companies in the crypto world that are not a direct competitor for cloud storage? Maybe even direct competitors for a joint venture? I won't name them in specific but it should be easy to figure our which super computers I am talking about.

    6. Whether a user is paying $60 or $25 a year for storage won’t be a sole reason to convert and start using SIA. It has to offer more than a cheaper price to win the masses. For me personally, exchanging files on the network sounds fun, not sure how this ties with legal objections about copyrights on games/music/ photos etc. Maybe look into the gaming industry where dedicated servers are needed for reliable connection between players?

    Thank you for your attention.

I will reply a bit with what I know.

    1. Installation with any blockchain takes quite a bit of time because your downloading every transaction into your walelt to be able to carry transactions. This is normal
    2. Buying Sia Coin is via exchange as it is a token not a currency. Sia is just a token to secure transactions within the service network.
    3. Sia ensures 3 x redundancy on the network by encrypting files and then sharding them to other hosts so no 1 single host contains the entire file.
    4. Sia doesnt have to worry about the overhead of centralized data storage- this is a benefit of decentralization..and also lowers cost rather than increases costs to renters/customers
    5. Large businesses do not necessarily have to be involved with crypto forit to be successful, but there are some who have already seen beenfit in the crypto arena and Sia.
Check out Obelisk and also MINEBOX. Dedicated industry leaders that are building tools for using in Sia Network.
    6. You would be surprised. Data storage currently is a multi billion dollar industry. If money can be saved people will seek Sia.
