Consensus file question and idea

  • Hey everyone,

I'm new to SIA and the forum. I think the whole idea is a really cool idea. Just got my mining rig setup. I had an idea that I wanted to bounce off other, more knowledgeable, forum members. As a test last night I used 7z (7zip compression format) and made a copy of the consensus file and then "zipped" it. It reduced the size of the consensus file by 80% Would I have no way to host the file but perhaps myself and some other people would be interested in seeding it as a torrent. Especially now with people like me in the USA and them gutting net neutrality it would save a ton of bandwidth and get people "going" quicker. Is this possible? Can you just move the "consensus" file to another persons computer, unzip it and then you'd be ready to rock. Unzipping it was fast only took about 30 seconds on my computer. 7z application for Windows and Keka for Mac are free apps to decompress the file. Please let me know, I don't have great bandwidth and it took 6 hours to download the file. I'd love to save some folks some time (and quite possibly some money) by distributing it in a smarter way. If it's possible and allowed?

  • I'm unsure of how the compression would effect the consensus Hopefully someone with a deeper understanding of the consensus file can provide an answer to this.

This is actually a really interesting idea... if the team was able to actually run the consensus from a compressed file. It would speed up distribution more.

If shared via a torrent, i would run it DHT only and setup a secured magnet link or download link on the Sia.tech website.

    Overall, A+ idea!
