Storage files for Hosting

  • Hi
I currently have a folder set aside for sia hosting -- 2.5 TB availability out of 3 TB. I would like to purchase maybe a 6 TB or 8 TB so as to increase my space. Question 1) If I purchase a new hard drive, can I "switch" the host folder from the current drive to the new one without causing hosting issues for my current contracts? 2) The 3 TB drive I know have is an internal one; will an external 6 or 8 TB work just as well?

    Thanks for any help....regards
    KWB

1)if your hosting u cant move hosted files to a new drive. You would have to attached the drive as a new drive only.
    2)Drive space is drive space

Thanks for the reply -- I won't attempt to move the host files. I don't want to mess up so let me clarify, is it possible to use two separate hard drives at the same time for hosting? In essence, in the Sia-UI wallet, can I click on the "Add Storage Folder" and add the second (external) hard drive? Thereby utilizing my existing 3 TB internal drive and a 6TB external and it will recognize and utilize both? Really, I don't like being "fined" sia coins for having a small hard drive. That's why I want to do it. Thanks again for your help.

Yes, you can use as many drives you want/can.
For example, I have shared 17 different folders.

It could be risky but you can reorganize the shared folder usage.
I started by sharing a single big folder (~2TB) and realized it creates a single big file. Then I added another folder and set the limit to 512GB. Then added another one 512GB folder and resized the first one to 1TB.
    the command for resizing is

siac host folder resize [path] [size]

Or just "host folder resize [path] [size]" if you type it in the terminal of UI.
It took some time (more than 10 sec) for Sia to resize the folder, but the "used" stat showed that half of the old (first) folder was redistributed into the added folders.
So with time (to free up space on the drives the first folders are) I ended up with 17 folders of 250GB each on different drives.

I believe (I haven't tried that) that if you first add additional folders and remove (by "siac host folder remove <path>") the old one afterwards siad would move the data from the old folder to the remaining (added).

Thank you for the great reply...I'll follow your suggestions. Very much appreciated!

  • The reason I wrote "it could be risky" is that I had some unexplained error messages in the host.log saying about "missed storage proof".
No one has answered how such errors could show up, if I haven't deleted ar otherwise lost any files from my host.
But as my collateral is not lost (shows 0H) I think (hope) these errors are not real.

The last one was on 14th july, and as my collateral is still not touched I think I can just ignore these
