I want to build a 30tb system for hosting

  • Hello,

I want to build a 30tb system for hosting, I started a small host around a week ago 700gb as a test on my laptop and I already have 9 contracts. I was first exposed to sia on bittrex and decided to see what was behind this small value coin, I cant describe how happy I am that I research first. I am not an expert with a computer, I dont have any experience with anything technical other than modding video games many years ago. Im not trying to get rich, in fact, I expect to SPEND thousands of dollars with no financial return, I would simply like to do my part.

My point is, I feel my current (however small) success is a mixture of luck and great information/instructions that I can find within the great community we have. My goal is to continue in my current direction and learn on the fly, adding more storage space is a must. Im naturally curious of what would be the best way to accomplish a 30tb system (power, speed, logevity, noise, heat), leaving the option for future expansion or just creating a twin. My main concern is heat, assuming that it can be run from a standard residential US outlet, like my computer. Again, I dont expect to build a business or experiment with development, I have a fulltime job and want a reliable station that I can ultimately monitor from work and physically check on at lunch.

please leave feedback, dont hesitate to tell me why I shouldnt, clearly Im in personally uncharted territory (see what I did there <) and I appreciate all input.

@sparechange if you set your collateral at 1 you might be ok but one little mistake and you could lose your coins.

Make sure you tag me @bryan if you need to me respond.
Forum Mod. I cannot fix transactions. I can't help with Mac or Linux.

  • @bryan thank you for the info, I believe have my collateral set much higher than that. I am curious how one could loose their coins, if you could provide me with links I will not waste them. Thank you for the comment.

  • Welcome to Sia, I love your spirit! I'm doing just what you do. Go have some help for getting started:

If you have specific questions such as which disks to buy, how much heat/noise would that result in, etc... then we can have that conversation as well. But need to know your questions, I'm afraid!

You will not lose your coins unless when you stop hosting before the contracts are finished or when you have too much downtime (basically you don't fulfill your obligations to the network). Not sure if @bryan confused this with renting for a moment, where many people are surprised that some of the allowance for renting will be spent even if they don't upload any files.

  • @maol "laptop" .... isn't always on or connected.
