Is there a hosting "testnet"?

  • Hi there, I've built that host on the Raspberry Pi as a prototype, (topic in the General Discussion page). And to keep my overheads low on the build, as I was unsure how stable it would be, used four 40Gb drives as they were very very cheap for a proof of concept.

It's all up and running and I have read through "The Hosting Handbook", great article, explains everything I needed to know. I also from this understand that I am penalized for hosting less than 1TB. So everything running but no contracts yet. It's fine I'm a patient person.

To re-assure myself that everything is running on the Pi ok and doesn't crash when receiving contracts and other general tasks is there a "testnet" of sorts where it can download and upload some nonsense data to prove it works?

Alternatively what very competitive figures are recommended at the moment for hosting to offset that penalty? I'm keen to see it get it's first contract and I'll consider this project complete.

    Thanks,
    Dan

  • You can mitigate your less than 1tb penalty by using a sparse file to emulate having 4TB of space.

  • Thanks, I'd seen the basics of that in the hosting handbook but I didn't realize the small space I am prototyping with had such a severe (512x) penalty. It's unlikely I'll get a contract with that. I was expecting no more than a 20x penalty.

I'll give it a week of 100% up time to reduce that penalty also, and have a look at spoofing a bit more storage after that to get testing underway.

I wouldn't have thought of faking the extra.
