How to setup for linux mining?

  • Please provide a minimal step of steps that I need to start mining.

With ethereum I didn't need to let wallet sync & other nonsense. I could create address with geth account new.
Then I could download Claymore mining and join a pool.

What do I need to do in order to create a siacoin wallet address for mining?
I was following this tutorial, but I don't really understand it:
    https://forum.sia.tech/topic/17/howto-run-sia-host-on-headless-linux-server-ubuntu

That mentions hosting, I am not interested in hosting, only mining.
Will this guide spare me the trouble of downloading / syncing / time wasting?

Also how will I confirmed I got payed by the pool?

I have been using linux for about a year now and I've never installed software by creating a user / group for it first. It seems I should create and remember or write down password for that user too?

I've googled "linux how and why to install software by creating user for it" but nothing really came up except this: https://serverfault.com/questions/258820/when-should-i-create-a-new-user-account-to-run-software-on-a-server

This is above my current level of understanding. Please explain what is gained by creating a user for piece of software.

  • So, you don't know much and dont want to do any research.
I can't help you much with Linux, but why not just use the Windows Gui ? Download, click through the installer and your wallet will be ready. You can starty mining immidiately, and before your first payout the blockchain will have downloaded too.

  • This isn't true. I am learning about users, groups and file permissions today, after postponing for about a year LOL.

But resources are scarce, there's lots of beginner type stuff like how to use commands, but I didn't find anything regarding best practices.

But this is stuff that takes hours and days to master and yes I don't have that time to understand details about siacoin wallet.

I am not going to be using windows thank you for the suggestion.

  • You could probably get more help if you ask more specific questions.

You can start mining without downloading the blockchain, but you wont be able to see you earnings as your wallet needs to scan through the blockchain to count your coins.
Once the deamon for your wallet is running, i think the blockchain will download automatically.

  • Specific questions:

    1. What are advantages and disadvantages of having every mining software have it's own user and group?

    1. What are specific situations in which that will save me?

    Is this true:
If a miner software is compromised, intentionally or unintentionally, added keylogger or something and I install it under my username then it can access the clipboard and all of my files?

And if compromised software is installed as it's own user, like siad, then it can't access clipboard or any files which are not public, right?

    1. Naming users - in that tutorial, why did he name user siad? Is that common to add d to software name?
What does it stand for? Deamon? Something else?

    2. Where to store users password - I am not going to remember them all?

    3. Are there any gotchas when installing software as it's own user / group?

  • 1&2 : You are right

    1. Perhaps ?

    2. Pice of Paper ? Write on your hand ?

    3. ??

  • I think you are vastly over complicating your mining. Do you plan on using this PC while you mine?

There is hundreds, if not thousands, of guides of on how to mine Eth, BTC, LTC, etc on linux.

The only difference between eth and Sia is using a miner that can hash blake2b. See siamining.com/help for a list of miners.

3: The D in Siad stands for daemon. "Sia Daemon." Use whatever username you would like.

    4: Password manager

  • Thanks. Yes I am overcomplicating, but this is 2nd time I needed to know more about users/groups/permissions in last 2 weeks so I am finally learning it thoroughly.

This PC is my home and work PC - I don't have a mining rig.

I thought about storing passwords somewhere in my home folder, but I guess password manager is better solution.

@whoami If you end up making a separate pc for mining you can use
simplemining.net it's an ubuntu prebuild. Been using it about a month it sucks but it keeps running and running.

Make sure you tag me @bryan if you need to me respond.
