First revenue reported.
LOL I'm like a kid being happy about a long awaited present.
But it is just a milestone in my Sia hosting test.
Today is the big day my hosts line does not show
Storage Revenue: 0 H
but this instead:
Storage Revenue: 3.776 mS
Looks like one contract has expired as contract creation fee also shows as Transaction Fee Compensation and not as Potential.
Contract Count: 112 Transaction Fee Compensation: 2.5 SC Potential Fee Compensation: 520 SC Transaction Fee Expenses: 0 H
I know, these reported numbers are not correct. But at least there is change and the zeros at revenue start to change to something different.
For the stats
host total uptime today (by SiaPulse) is 70 days. So yes my host went online on 19.th may (SiaHub still tells me 1 month uptime).
I started with a 1000SC/TB/month offering. Then the "race to bottom started". I did not jump down the cliff but decided to gradually decrease my price, Today I am at 550 SC/TB/month. Both (SiaPulse and SiaHub) tell I am earning ~3.9SC/day
Now I'll stop reducing my storage price and wait to see when (if) my host starts loosing contracts (the GoodToUpload and GoodToRenew may kick in). Currently I am getting new contracts and uploaded data every day. I even needed to add additional shared folder to not fall under the 4TB remaining line.
It would be great if you would collect (and display on the hosts detail page) the history if the offered price too (for each host). I assume you just multiply the current price with current used storage. But I am not sure if it can be calculated this easy. Is the changed price applied to existing contracts and uploaded data too?
Simply showing "earnings in SC/day" makes the comparison to competing hosts harder.
Make sure you tag me @bryan if you need to me respond.
Forum Mod. I cannot fix transactions. I can't help with Mac or Linux.
Unofficial Web Based Siacoin Wallet. No more syncing.
I'll continue this as my long term "test report".
3 months passed since start of my hosting experience.
The current numbers reported are:
Host Financials: Contract Count: 126 Transaction Fee Compensation: 32.5 SC Potential Fee Compensation: 627.5 SC Transaction Fee Expenses: 0 H Storage Revenue: 11.52 SC Potential Storage Revenue: 527.7 SC Locked Collateral: 41.11 KS Risked Collateral: 1.353 KS Lost Collateral: 0 H
I see I have not changed any parameter for 25 days. In the last 2 weeks the reported contract count had increased to ~160 and dropped back to 125 after restarting siad. Yesterday I saw 128 contracts reported, now are 126. This change looks legit as 2 contracts may have expired. A look in the log tells the same:

So far so good. Storage proofs are being submitted resulting in revenue. Let's look at financials.
At the beginning I transferred 75KS for this host to play with. Now:
siac wallet balance Wallet status: Encrypted, Unlocked Confirmed Balance: 53.21 KS Unconfirmed Delta: +0 H Exact: 53214820698336640604287829416 H Siafunds: 0 SF Siafund Claims: 0 H Estimated Fee: 30 mS / KB
Hmm. Let's check. 75KS (initial) - 53.21KS (present) = 21.79KS.
So a bit less than 21.79 is still locked as collateral. Should be. Kind of...
That's weird. Look at the host -v output, there is clearly :
Locked Collateral: 41.11 KS
Risked Collateral: 1.353 KS
Lost Collateral: 0 H
Something is definitely wrong here.
If my Locked collateral is 41.11KS, missed are 21.79, What are the 19.32KS difference?
Revenue? Looks incredible... Look at it once more:
Host Financials: Contract Count: 127 Transaction Fee Compensation: 32.5 SC Potential Fee Compensation: 630 SC Transaction Fee Expenses: 0 H Storage Revenue: 11.52 SC Potential Storage Revenue: 528 SC Locked Collateral: 42.11 KS Risked Collateral: 1.353 KS Lost Collateral: 0 H Download Revenue: 189.1 uS Potential Download Revenue: 22.44 mS Upload Revenue: 415.9 mS Potential Upload Revenue: 15.91 SC
Wow. One more contract, 1KS more locked collateral, and more used storage (potential storage revenue increased by 1SC) in the time I write this long report. Yay!!!
Anyway. The revenue is not measured in KS but in SiaCoins, milliSiacoins and microSiacoins.
Download related revenue is from the old days when I had a download fee set. I set that to zero 2 months ago (not sure when exactly).
So it is clear the financial numbers do not sum up. Let's look at siac wallet transactions...
Damn, that's a long list...
One thing I notice- there are no "incoming SC" transactions except the first initial transfer of 75KS. So, all transactions after the first are zero or with negative amount.
[height] [transaction id] [net siacoins] [net siafunds] 105469 -1234567890 deleted numbers 1234567890- 75000.00 SC 0 SF ... 119927 -1234567890 deleted numbers 1234567890- -1000.00 SC 0 SF
The last one is recognizable as the locked collateral for the latest new contract.
I deleted the transaction ids so that no one comes to the idea to send there some SC and confuses my later calculations.
So, the total sum of all transactions by math is 47450.36 SC.
The reported balance was 53.21KS. If I repeat it now,
Confirmed Balance: 53.27 KS Unconfirmed Delta: +0 H Exact: 53269117242771690029403242549 H Siafunds: 0 SF Siafund Claims: 0 H
The reported "confirmed balance" has increased a little bit... by 54.297 SC to be more precise.
But anyway that does differ significantly from any other calculated number. To recall:
Initial - locked = 32.89KS (revenue not counted as it should be less than 1KS)
Total transaction sum for the wallet = 47.45KS
Reported by siac wallet are 53.27KS
So the question is- which one is the nearest to the actual true number?
My host is trackable on SiaHub.
Yesterday I had the idea that my free space is limiting acquisition of new contracts and I added 500GB (2x250GB) to my shared space.
Today I get one additional contract that locks 1KS collateral. So I suspect all my shared space is "locked" (reserved for existing active contracts) again.
Or is the space not locked/reserved like collateral?
well... physically your space is allocated on your drive the moment you set so and so much space aside for SIA.
for rating your host, the metric "remaining storage left" is a part of the calculation, so if the remaining storage (calculated on the porin of storage you have allocated) becomes too low, your host will face punishment on the multiplier remainingstorage) because of it. With todays very low demand of space that is unlikely to happen quickly
I suspect the space is logically locked by contracts.
I mean There is 5TB space shared and contracts active (with locked collateral) for 5TB potential usage.
So all space is "booked/reserved" and there is no point to allow make more contracts for the same space.
Sounds logical for me.
We know it is bad when a flight is overbooked and all the people really come to that flight and want to get on board.
So I think maybe Sia does not allow "overbooking" of hosts shared space. Especially in times of abundant free space on the network... Because it would be unfair for the renters. They have put their SC aside (allowance paid in advance for possible uploading). Hosts do not pay a fine if they run out of storage.
But that would mean there is less space on the network than visible.
I imagine some renter from ancient times has put say 1MS allowance and not cancelled that. That renter is eligible to use the space what can be rented for 1MS...
I am still trying to figure out my "balance".
Since my previous post there are a handful old contracts expired (closed), the active contract count (without restarting the node) has dropped to 120.
wallet balance shows:
Confirmed Balance: 53.67 KS Unconfirmed Delta: +0 H Exact: 53668437508446013042835105663 H
So it is slightly more (~400SC) than yesterday.
At wallet transactions I still don't see any transaction with >0SC (except the initial transfer).
the host -v tells me:
Contract Count: 120 Transaction Fee Compensation: 62.5 SC Potential Fee Compensation: 590 SC Transaction Fee Expenses: 0 H Storage Revenue: 15.47 SC Potential Storage Revenue: 530.5 SC Locked Collateral: 41.41 KS Risked Collateral: 1.361 KS Lost Collateral: 0 H Download Revenue: 1.009 mS Potential Download Revenue: 21.62 mS Upload Revenue: 548.3 mS Potential Upload Revenue: 15.94 SC
Why I mentioned the SiaHub block explorer? I found that I can get the information about file contracts on it.
So, if I put the hosts "unlock hash" as the hash to look for I get a list with my hosts contracts and revisions (megabytes and Siacoins).
And if I scroll down to the last available row, I can see total sum called "Total SC Outputs" whatever that means. It sums only the visible rows so you have to scroll down to get the grand total.
I am getting "Total SC Outputs: 42,314.33 SC"
This doesn't match any number I have seen before, but the closest is the reported "locked collateral".
The deeper into the forest, the more wood. (old latvian proverb)
Luckily I saved the transaction list yesterday so I can compare and see how the total balance can increase without any transaction with positive amount of SC...
No magic here, there are only new transactions with negative numbers added to the transaction list.
The total sum of my transactions has decreased. Now it is 47305.79 SC...
I have learned (confirmed) that those numbers are not accurate due to some (to devs known) bugs. The transaction list also has bugs and not all transactions are visible.
I'll just wait for the next release.
But I do want to know my hosts "financial performance" after the 3 month period...
And I am curious about the ratio of contract count, available storage and locked collateral.
It could/should be the high price limiting new contracts.
Or is it the fact that all my storage is already rented out (but not utilized)?
If I do the simplest (in my opinion most likely applicable) math and deduct the available funds from initial, 22.67KS are locked in collateral. That would mean locked are 15 terabytemonths or ... "nearly exact" all my shared space for 3 months.
As I could be booked out, I'll test that by resuming the gradual price decrease. To see if more contracts with more collateral being locked will be made.
This is getting interesting.
A couple of contracts got completed, in host.log followed by the notice like
Successfully submitted a storage proof. Revenue is 1108205799652408182320436655.
Total contract count dropped to 114 (without restarting the node), the locked collateral dropped a bit too, only risked collateral increased since my stats 4 days ago.
Host Financials: Contract Count: 114 Transaction Fee Compensation: 87.5 SC Potential Fee Compensation: 550 SC Transaction Fee Expenses: 0 H Storage Revenue: 71.73 SC Potential Storage Revenue: 487.2 SC Locked Collateral: 41.78 KS Risked Collateral: 1.256 KS Lost Collateral: 0 H Download Revenue: 1.009 mS Potential Download Revenue: 21.62 mS Upload Revenue: 2.419 SC Potential Upload Revenue: 14.33 SC
Now I look at my balance:
Confirmed Balance: 52.66 KS Unconfirmed Delta: +0 H Exact: 52663150826231897283178540630 H
Locked collateral (reported) decreased.
Some revenue earned.
But the balance has not increased! Just the opposite, it decreased too...
Was 53.67KS four days ago, is 52.66KS now.
A quick check at transaction list shows me some new "likely collateral locking" transactions, totaling in -1.8KS.
One -1000.00 SC including.
If I assume that there are invisible earnings transactions, that looks again possible.
As I added a little bit storage and some old contracts completed, I believe there are a couple new "bigger than previus" contracts. And so I assume that all my shared space is again reserved for existing contracts.
I'll continue to lower pricing gradually till it reaches 500SC/TB/month, but the most interesting point for me will be if the locked collateral increases (or my reported balance decreases).
If not, I'll know that all my space is already reserved, just not used yet. That would mean I have to add more storage instead of lowering the price.
Please keep on posting, I'm so curious to see how it works out for you and I really hope SIA will make it!
There is not much to report...
I continue to lower my price by 5SC a day.
There is near no change in contract count or usage or any other resulting number...
Contract Count: 122 Transaction Fee Compensation: 102.5 SC Potential Fee Compensation: 560 SC Transaction Fee Expenses: 0 H Storage Revenue: 87.3 SC Potential Storage Revenue: 495.2 SC Locked Collateral: 44.46 KS Risked Collateral: 1.292 KS Lost Collateral: 0 H Download Revenue: 3.53 mS Potential Download Revenue: 19.1 mS Upload Revenue: 2.935 SC Potential Upload Revenue: 14.56 SC
17 days Since last restart :
RPC Stats: Error Calls: 299 Unrecognized Calls: 33 Download Calls: 2073 Renew Calls: 13 Revise Calls: 7123 Settings Calls: 244688 FormContract Calls: 183
Reported were 122 contracts (for 3 days unchanged), so I decided to restart my node to see the actual contract count.
After restart the only one number that changed was the contract count and shows I have 117 active contracts.
RPC stats are reset to zero of course.
And, the reported balance:
Confirmed Balance: 52.23 KS
Unconfirmed Delta: +0 H
Exact: 52234835252831304706591459168 H
It is again a little bit lower than previous time.
Looking at my host on SiaHub.info I see there is no change for three last days, except the earnings decrease because I lower my storage price.
I'll try once more to add more storage next week to see if something changes. I am not sure the 500GB I added last time was the reason of the bump in utilisation.
I'm a newbie on SIA but looking at your numbers and statistics they make some senses, you earn a little bet less than 5 SC/day for your <300MB storage used and it shows in your storage revenue. 300MB used out of 5.5GB is almost 6% which is pretty good considering that the platform average is 2% and your prices are way above the 100SC price average. What you seem to ignore are the fees, they are above the revenues this could explain your balance going down. I haven't figured out how the fees are calculated, as I said I'm a newbie, but it looks like so far they are not to your advantage. I also noticed that your collateral are way above any kind of income you can expect, are you backing your platform to an offsite solution? in case of flood, fire, disk crash, robbery or others disasters, otherwise you might very easily lose your collateral. With your figures I don't have a clue to what happened to the the 19KSC discrepancy.
I believe it is really a sort of bugs affecting the numbers shown by the
siac host -v.
So the numbers that seem to me at least "likely credible" are:
- the number of active contracts (after restart of siad)
- storage folder usage
And these correlate well to the used storage:
- storage and upload/download revenue (earned and potential)
- risked collateral.
Completely unbelievable seems the reported locked collateral. That simply can't be true if the balance reported by wallet is accurate. One of these numbers is incorrect, I just hope that the incorrect one is the reported locked collateral and not the balance reported by wallet module.
And I know the transaction list does not show all transactions. Earned revenues are in invisible transactions. That is definitely a bug.
As a host I don't pay any fees. Only transaction fees for submitting storage proofs and contracts to the blockchain. But these are so low that I don't take them into account.
If you ask why do I do this like I do, that need a bit longer explanation.
The short version (main reason) is- I am testing. I want to prove my belief that you don't need to be cheaper than others to earn some money. Or, if not, i'll know I was wrong...
Yes, I am aware I risk real money. I know I would loose in case of a disaster.
But I am to old to believe there is an easy profit possible without taking risk. So I have done most of possible to limit the risk. In case of flood or fire the lost collateral would be one of the least losses. I trust the hardware my host runs on. And that is not cheap. Of course, there are more things possible to do but that would be to expensive, I have not the funding to build a real datacenter with independent separate power and internet connections.
Oh, I think I got the reason for the reported locked collateral...
If I look at the current numbers:
Locked Collateral: 43.02 KS
and that I have 5TB shared.
There are some contracts still active from time I had set the collateral higher.
I started with 1000SC as storage price and 3000SC as collateral for 1TB/month if I remember right.
So my numbers won't be exact but at least should point the direction.
I'll assume 45KS locked for 5TB data (44.4KS seen as reported). That means 9KS for 1TB.
If divided by 1500SC/TB/month I get the result my 5TB are already reserved for 6 months.
But as the default contract duration is 3 months (or it is expected to renew after 3 months), only half of the collateral is being locked for real.
That would make sense. And it makes my theory about "I am completely booked (logically locked) out" more likely to be true. That would mean "I will not get new contracts until previous expire" regardless what pricing for my services I set...
So, that would also mean if I do not change the collateral per TB and do not increase the shared space (don't add more shared folders), It should not grow bigger than 45KS.
The easiest way to test that would be by adding more space.
So, if I add 1 TB more storage, the reported "Locked collateral" should rise by 9KS after a while and reach nearly 54KS.
And the balance in wallet should drop by ~4.5KS and reach something around 49KS (as I expect some revenue from old contracts).
I'll continue to gradually lower the storage price. Next stop is at 450 (have 495 at present). After that I'll "tweak" my collateral settings.
If i look at my host usage graph for the 3m period, I clearly recognize there is a correlation between available (shared space) and used space. Every time I add more storage, there is a used storage step up too.

So I expect the "Locked collateral" rise to something like 61KS
Confirmed balance to drop to near 44KS
@reinisp Yes the fees are small but so are the revenues, the fees are higher than the revenue about 120% fee, I don't understand how you can expect to make a profit out of this system. At the current rate and without the fees you earn just enough to pay for 10W of electricity I guess your system used a lot more than that.
It is just... you can't make profit with hosting at present.
Just look at any top 100 hosts. No one is earning more than 10SC a day. No matter how many contracts, available or used storage they have. The main hope for all hosts is the growing demand from renters.
So it is a good time to test things out and prepare for the time people realize that storage on Sia is better than storage at Amazon, Microsoft or Google or whatever "conventional cloud storage".
One of things to test and try is to minimize the operating costs. The "least loss" currently could be the siaberry project. But you can't really expect any profit even with that. 8TB drives are the best in $/Tb terms, but they still cost more than you can earn with current pricing in 2 years. And remember, a hosts shared storage won't ever be fully utilized (the remaining storage penalty).
This is one of reasons I am not going to lower my price to such a low level as it is common at present. I am already earning the same amount of SC from my 280 GB used by renters as others get from a terabyte used.
Two weeks passed, time to take a snapshot.

My expectations are not met...
Reported locked collateral has increased but not to what I expected. And "risked collateral" has doubled, but the storage space used by renters has increased only by ~11%.
And wallet balance has increased not decreased as I expected...
And the reduced price has resulted more in reduced expected earnings than more increased usage.
The reason for that could be that my high pricing holds my host off from top200 and that means that existing renters do not even ask for my hosts settings. On my renter node I still see totally outdated data of my host... but in the hostdb.log I find:
2017/09/16 21:52:14.237643 scan.go:339: Performing scan on 200 online hosts and 200 offline hosts. 2017/09/17 00:38:43.150031 scan.go:339: Performing scan on 200 online hosts and 200 offline hosts. 2017/09/17 04:09:12.437431 scan.go:339: Performing scan on 200 online hosts and 200 offline hosts. 2017/09/17 11:15:30.150692 scan.go:339: Performing scan on 200 online hosts and 200 offline hosts.
I suspect that once you are pushed out of top 200, you never get queried again.
So I have to continue the price reduction to get into top 200 again. Though, that does not guarantee my host getting queried ever again from existing nodes, as these assume my host has price over 500SC and resulting score puts my host into #260, so out of "worth scanning" list.
So the next stop will be at 400SC/TB/month, that would be roughly what in my opinion is justified if the coin price on exchanges does not rise substantially. And that would be the point where I should start to reduce the collateral offered.
Uh. All my latest assumptions were wrong...
Still hovering around #250 in ranking score but getting new big contracts and new data uploaded.
Expected earnings are above 5SC/day again. Though, by hosting more data.
But the problem with estimating/controlling the collateral is not solved.
2/3 of my allowed collateral are reported to be locked (50KS), but only 1/3 (25KS) have left my wallet.
So if I continue to get many new contracts I'll run out of collateral...
