Minebox and the race to the bottom

  • I surely could be wrong but for me the minebox project looks like HP Microserver (Gen8) hardware with a stripped/customised linux or other os called "Minebox OS".
And the proposed configuration looks dangerous- 2 Seagate drives striped (no redundancy).
Another suspicious thing is "1 year parts warranty"...
These servers are not anymore available to order, looks "old tech excess stock" to me.
The only "added value" is the OS. And maybe some coins put into the wallet that comes with the OS.
I personally would not trust such a box my really important files for long term storage.
Though, it could be the OS is so good it can manage (survive) a striped volume drive crash and is "real gold" for efficient storage. But for me it sounds too good to be true.
The Minebox developers should tell more about the OS.
    Edit:
their homepage tells it is customised Centos and the filesystem is BTRFS...

  • So much misinformation. Moorscode has ignored this information in the minebox slack (or forgotten it already.)

Minebox is not related to Sia Dev Team, to the progress of Sia, or to HP. This has been explained many times but for some reason Moors still ties Minebox and Sia together.

Minebox is using HP Microservers, and simply rebranding them. It's a popular thing many vendors use for their appliances. (rebranding.)

Minebox uses a custom version of the NAS OS RockStor. Rockstor is based on CentOS.

Minebox works as a NAS, without ANY interaction to the SIA network. The only portion of Minebox that utilizes SIA is Renting and/or Hosting.

Minebox comes preloaded with Sia to start a user in either renting and/or hosting. The total amount is to be determined. The original amount was 50k sia, but that value has decreased as the price of Sia has increased AND less is needed to host and rent.

Minebox DOES NOT MINE. It is not designed to mine in any capacity.

So my assumptions are true (in general).
Anyway I don't like 1 year warranty on parts. At least for devices named "server" or "NAS".

Regarding mining, the process of hosting can be seen as "mining" to some extent.

  • @reinisp

I would rather see mining be referenced to advancing the blockchain. Hosting procures coins through contracts.

The warranty is so short because that's all the warranty HP offers by default. Extended warranties are available past one year through HP if you need a longer one.

I'm also not sure why Gen10's are not being used. They are under $400 each... and came with 8gb at that price range.

Agreed, mining is advancing the blockchain.
I just think the most of miners do the mining process not for securing the blockchain but with the intention to receive coins.
And in this regard hosting is a way to receive some coins in exchange for electricity, lost storage space (for other tasks unusable) and staking existing coins similar to mining where one receives coins in exchange of electricity and lost (for other tasks unusable) GPU power.

Precisely! It's a two way street. Miner's don't give a shit about securing the blockchain. Crypto needs a method to secure the chain. Hashing power is exchanged for profit.

@xurious Same reason you have to pay $5 to get your money out of the ATM. Banks don't care about securing your money. They care about selling it to you.

  • @bryan Heh. Need a better Bank/ATM. My Credit union doesn't charge me for ATM withdraws, and there is a huge chain of gas stations in the midwest that all have free to use ATMs.

    Minebox is using HP Microservers

    I never provided misinformation...

I stated very clearly that MINEBOX is not HP. Its not. Just because "Minebox is using HP Microservers" does not make them HP.
If anyone reads the Terms and Conditions of the purchase. you will quickly realize this. Reading is fundamental.. stop listening to this Sia scam team for the TRUTH.
