Potential renters perspective

  • Is there any "authoritative" public webpage showing the current storage renting price?
If I want to tell someone he could use sia network for his data storage, I should tell where to look for the current price.
As I understand the SiaHub.info shows the potential revenue for hosting (750SC/TB/mo). Or is that the "average price renters are currently paying"?

    My node tells me:
    Renter Prices (estimated):
Fees for Creating a Set of Contracts: 499 SC
    Download 1 TB: 294.1 SC
Store 1 TB for 1 Month: 1.412 KS
    Upload 1 TB: 174.6 SC

So, a new renter would pay a "initialization fee" 500SC before uploading anything, 175SC/TB for actually uploading, 1415SC/TB a month for storing uploaded data and later 300SC/TB for downloading it?

This information should be available for a potential renter before installing something (the wallet).

  • Check the Hosting Handbook for more info about that - there's no one size fits all kind of pricing in Sia, it depends on your requirements.

However if you'd like to use one as an approximation, then SiaHub.info's info wouldn't be bad if it wasn't broken, and it's been broken for a number of days now (it stays flat on 750SC).

FWIW, my Sia Cluster instance is reporting an average of 2.9KS and a weighted average of 3.9KS / TB / month.

    Sia Cluster pricing

  • I see a couple of fundamental problems from the renters perspective that makes choosing sia as a solution for storage needs not so easy.

    1. not all features are implemented yet
    2. no budget can be estimated before starting using it.

The first problem will disappear with time, so it's not fundamental. But if I plan to use some sort of subscription based storage space, I need to know the offered options and pricing.
Now the only option I can set is "allowance". But the allowance does not guarantee that there will be the needed (planned) space available.
Or am I talking about old problem that is solved already? Can I tell my wallet/renter how much storage i'll use and for how long? How could the renter module know what type of user will I be? The problem is the fluctuating price too. If I know I will need to store x TB of data (off site backups/archive, stored once and hopefully not needed afterwards) for at least one year. I need to estimate the budget (and get the needed amount of coins) for at least the first year. How can I do that if there is no estimated price at all?

  • @reinisp agreed on 1.

Also, budgeting will become easier as the market grows & stabilizes. If the team's projections about participant motivation & storage pricing come true, then putting data on Sia will only ever get cheaper ("race to the bottom").

We see constant price reductions hold true on the pricing front for Amazon as the largest storage provider, so it sounds reasonable, IMHO.
